After a long silence, we have some news! The All Greater Rochester list has been released for this cross country season. We had 7 members of the team make honorable mention. On the boys side:
Lou Payne
Dennis Pierce
Jesse Dean-Prince
Dominic Staub
Cameron Williams
On the girls side:
Jenna Franklin
Libby Smith
Congratulations to all of the boys and girls that made the list.
On a side note, most of the team has most on to winter sports. Those that are not are more than welcome to come run and lift with Mr. Chichester and I on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school (around 3:45-4pm outside of the PAC). If you do decide to come, bring warm clothing as we will be running outside!

Sectionals @ Midlakes
Championship season has come and gone! While I would have loved to have posted updates as we went, I ran out of time! As you may have noticed, I love stats, so the following posts may be lengthy. I recapped the county meets below. But first, sectionals! The teams raced like champions on a muddy and freezing Midlakes course.
The girls started off the meet with an 8th place finish out of 11 complete teams. Last year, the team was 15th out of 16 teams, so we moved up! Jenna ran a very savvy race to finish 9th, earning herself a sectional patch - she was 22nd at the mile, 14th at the two mile and in contention for 7th with 100m to go. The last time an Arkport girl finished that high was Mary Frances Aini in 2009 - she went on to place 19th at the state meet. Libby was next in line, finishing 41st when she had entered the meet at a projected 54th place. Mackenzie, Chloe and Michayla rounded out the top 5 finishing 66th, 76th and 80th. Mackenzie ran over 4 minutes faster than her last race at the sectional course! Rachel ran despite sickness, and ended up playing a crucial part in the team success (a post race DQ made her our 5th scorer). Over all, the girls had a phenomenal day. Looking over the results, there were only 34 middle schoolers (7th & 8th grade) in the entire meet - all classes - and 5 of them were Ark-Can! The most any other schools (all classes) had on their team were 3 8th graders. Needless to say, we were the youngest team at the meet, but ended up 43rd out of 50th in the merge beating a few much larger schools (Greece Athena and Gates Chili). The future is bright!
For the boys, the finished 5th out of 22 schools in the D/DD merge! Lou and Dennis both earned sectional patches by finishing in the top 10 of class D. Lou, Dennis, Jesse and Cameron all dropped an average of over 60s from their pre-sectional times! Lou managed to kick down a few of his Steuben County rivals, while Dennis managed to hold off Hammondsport's second man for the first time this season! Dom, JDP and Cam all finished within 32 seconds of each other which sealed the deal for a 5th place finish. Evan finished 128th with a time of 23:04 to wrap up his first sectional appearance! In the merged scoring (all classes), the boys were 34th out of 66 complete teams, beating out some much bigger schools (Greece Athena, Way-Co, Dansville, Livonia and Hilton to name a few). All of the boys ran tough, and ended the season in a huge way. On a note for next year - Dom is the 34th returner, Cameron 48th and Evan 94th. With the addition of Andrew, and potentially a soccer convert, the seniors leave the team in good hands. Great way to end the season every body!

Varsity Counties @ Hornell
Both the boys and girls teams had strong showings at the county meet, last Friday. The girls wound up 2nd, while the boys beat Hammondsport out for 3rd by one point! On the girls side, Jenna and Libby both ended up in the top 10 so they each went home with some hardware! Rachel, Chloe, Mackenzie and Michayla rounded out the top 15. Jenna, Libby, Rachel, Chloe, Mackenzie, Michayla and Syd all ran personal bests on the course! Great job for all of those that ended their season!
Lou ran very tough to end up 4th, while Dennis was just out of the top 10 (11th). Our top 7 was rounded out by a big race from JDP (and huge lifetime best), Dom, Cam, Evan and John. Course bests were run by Lou, Dennis, JDP, Dom, Cam, Evan, Jake, Justin, Drew, Logan, Hench and Ethan. Congratulations on a great season for everyone!
Modified Counties @ JT
The modified meet went better than any of the coaches had hoped for! Kelsey wound up finishing 3rd overall with a time of 13:46 - if she had kept that pace up for another 1.22 miles she would have ran a sub 23 minute 5k! Sophia, NyVeah and Emma all ran season bests as well for the long course - each of them were on pace for sub 26 minute 5ks. The progress they have all made throughout the season was incredible, and we hope they are as proud of themselves as we are of them.
The boys were highlighted by a runner up finish of Andrew to Addison's top runner. They were separated by only 3 seconds - the closest Andrew had finished previously was almost 30 seconds. His pace would have put him under 19 minutes for the 5k, so he has definitely made great strides in his running. Paul had his best time yet, as well as Kaleb and Art. They all finished in the top 10, and it capped off as everyone's strongest race of the season. Congratulations!

Alexander Invitational
Sorry for the delay! It has been a busy few days, and I was waiting for the full results to be posted so I could post them. Unfortunately, I can't locate the modified results, and my phone died while I was timing before I could record all of the splits for the girls race and modified girls race!
As far as team placing goes, after number crunching, the girls were 7th out of 7 complete teams, with Avon and Oakfield within 50 points (that equates to each girl running about 1 minute or so faster). As for the boys, the results were too large to crunch the numbers, but we have an idea of where they landed (right between Alexander and Avon).
On the boys side, there were solid performances from top to bottom, highlighted by Lou finishing 13th, Dom dropping 3 minutes and 48 seconds off of last years time, Evan dropping 4 minutes and 19 seconds off of last years time, John dropping 54 seconds, Hench dropping 2 minutes and 57 seconds and Ethan dropping 4 minutes and 43 seconds! The team is looking good heading in to the County Championships, as they will battle against Hammondsport and Campbell for a 2nd place team finish.
On the girls side, Jenna posted another strong race to finish as the 7th class D/DD girl! A strong race from Michayla, Mackenzie, Libby and Chloe made up for running without Rachel. The girls ran a patient race, and were passing people from mile one to the finish! The girls have 2nd place locked up at the county meet, as they are one of two complete teams (Addison being the other). The real fun will be to see how many girls can wind up finishing in the top 10 - The top 7 finishers receive a county patch and 8-10 receive a ribbon.
The modified races were highlighted by Andrew's individual championship over a lot of larger school athletes (Alden and Batavia, to name a few). He ran 54 seconds faster than last year, and led the race wire to wire. Paul, Art and Kaiden all followed up with strong races, and Kaleb is back in action for the second time in almost 5 weeks! As for the girls, I am not 100% sure of their places, but when Sophia and Kelsey came through the finish they were around 13th-15th place, with NyVeah and Emma only 45 seconds behind to finish in the top 30!
The mods will wrap up their season tomorrow at Jasper, while the varsity athletes will race their county meet in Hornell on Friday.

Duel @ Arkport
Today wrapped up the last duel meet of the season. Both teams had very strong performances to top off senior night. The boys finish their season at 12-7, while the girls finish at 13-6. Bravo!
The mod squad kicked off the races by running the 2 mile course, which they were all thrilled to run. Every single athlete went through their 1.3 mile split faster than they ran the 1.3 mile course the last time they raced, and continued for another .7 miles at that pace! Looking toward the future, only Jenna and Libby went through the 2 mile mark faster than Sophia and Kelsey ran it, while NyVeah and Emma were close to Mackenzie's 2 mile split. For the boys, Andrew ran a touch faster than JDP for his 2 mile split, Paul would have been floating around Evan and Cameron, and Kaleb, Kaiden and Art would have all been around Drew and Justin. Needless to say, the future of the modified squad is bright!
The boys continued to impress with Lou dipping under 18 minutes yet again! This was followed by strong races from Dennis, Dom and JDP who are beginning to close the gap on each other at the right time of the season! Cam had a bit off an off day, but managed to pull Evan along to a strong finish. John, Jake, Drew, Justin, Hench, Ethan and Logan all had great finishes. Some of the other "highlights" are listed below.
For the girls, Jenna ran another personal best, as well as Libby, Michayla, Chloe, Regan, Sydney and Alexis. Michayla and Alexis had break out races, dropping over 2 minutes and 4 minutes off of their next fastest 5ks! Libby dropped over 100 seconds from her last race on the Arkport course. All of the results fair well for championship season, but first, the Alexander Invitational this Friday!

Cuba Rushford Invitational
Saturday the team traveled to the muddy Cuba Rushford Invitational to bring home some more hardware. The girls ended up with a second place plaque, and medals for Jenna, Libby, Chloe, Rachel, Michayla and Mackenzie, and ribbons for Syd, Regan and Alexis. Rachel was the sole athlete that had run the course last year, but this year was a slightly different and slower course. Great work girls!
On the boys side, the team placed 4th, and Lou, Dennis, and Dom went home with medals while Cam and JDP earned themselves some ribbons! Lou, Dom, Evan, John, Andrew and Ethan all had significant drops in time from last year, highlighted by Evan dropping an incredible 6 minutes!
The modified squad ran very well in the mud, as Sophia dropped almost 2 minutes and Andrew dropped almost 90 seconds off of last years times. Almost every modified athlete ran their fastest opening mile of any race so far this year!

Duel @ Jasper Troupsburg
Tuesday was our 2nd to last duel meet at Jasper (not the giant hill!). The girls and boys were both running a few down, which strongly affected the team scores. The boys ended up 1-2, losing to Hammondsport and Addison to bring their overall record to 10-7 while the girls team went 2-1 defeating JT and Hammondsport to bring their overall record to 11-6!
On the girls side, we were able to have a complete squad finish even though we were down almost half the team due to sickness/injury (it is that time of the year unfortunately!). Each girl that finish was a contributor to the score.
On the boys side, Lou managed to finish ahead of Addison's top runner, while Cam and Dennis were able to finish ahead of Hammonsport's 4th man. Justin made his first top 7 appearance, while John moved in to the top 5 and Jake moved up to be the 6th man.
The modified runners ran a seemingly unknown distance - we were told it was similar to McQuaid but the times did not reflect that. With only a few races left, Art has continued to make huge leaps forward.

Presectional Invite @ Midlakes
With a smaller squad this weekend, the team traveled to Midlakes to preview the sectional course. It was a slow, muddy day, but the team managed to go home with three medals from Jenna, Lou and Dennis, and two ribbons from Cameron and JDP.
It was hard to see how the team stacked up on the girls side without a scoring team, but even missing a few of the top boys, the boys team managed to take 6th. A few of the usual suspects were not there (Avon, Honeoye, East Rochester and Campbell), but it still looks as if the boys should be ranked in the top 5 of the Class D teams in the section.
The girls team struggled in the mud, but Jenna did manage to finish in the top 10, and was only 2 places and 38 seconds behind a girl ranked 54th in the state for Class D. To put it in perspective, this girl finished 76 seconds ahead of Jenna at McQuaid, so she closed the gap significantly.

Duel @ Arkport
The team kicked it in to high gear today as the boys and girls both increased their record to 9-5!
With the absence of Dominic and Mason on the boys side, Lou, Dennis, JDP, Cam and Evan stepped up big time to beat Campbell (we were previously 0-2 against them) by just a single point - Bravo gentlemen! Overall, times were very solid considering the slippery conditions.
On the girls side, they ran without a few key runners as well but still managed to creep up closer to narrow the score between us and Hornell. Jenna moved up yet again to outrun Hornell's 3rd girl, while our 2-5 girls (Libby, Rachel, Chloe and Mackenzie) all managed to finish within 73 seconds of each other.
The modified race was abbreviated compared to their typical race distance, and the modified girls all finished within 1 minute and 56 seconds of each other, while the boys were 2 minutes and 11 seconds apart. The modified athletes will be off this weekend while the varsity teams travel to Midlakes to preview the sectional course. This should be another great opportunity to square up against the top Class D teams in Section V.
Around the section:
The boys team managed to jump to 19th in the state rankings for Class D, jumping them to the 5th ranked team in the section, while the girls are sitting close to 10th in the section - a big improvement from the boys 10th place finish and the girls 15th place finish from last fall. Individually, Lou, Dennis and Dom all moved in to the top 40 (22nd, 38th and 39th), as well as Jenna (16th) and Libby (45th).

McQuaid Invitational
After an eventful morning of races, the team survived yet another McQuaid Invitational! The meet was led off by the modified girls where Kelsey managed to notch a 6th All Time on the top 10 list, only 15 seconds behind what Jenna ran last year. Sophia, NyVeah, Emma and Haylie all ran personal best times as well. In the modified boys race, Andrew was .9 seconds from breaking the school record - quite the feat after spending a few hours in the hospital all night with a fractured finger! Paul moved up to 7th all time, while Kaiden and Art both ran personal bests.
On the boys side, the team finished 10th out of 48 schools, the 5th Section V Class D school just 3 points ahead of Alexander. While the average time for the team was slower than last year, it bodes well for the end of the season knowing that there is more time to drop! Cameron walked out with another 60+ second personal best, Jesse shaved a few seconds off his Leroy time, Evan dropped 81 seconds from last McQuaid, and Dom dropped 5 minutes and 25 seconds off of last years time - crazy what some summer running can do!
The girls ended up 12th out of the Section V class D schools, and for context they finished 15th out of 16 complete teams at sectionals last year. Jenna walked out with a ribbon, and just managed to make her way on to the top 10 all time list (under the records tab). With another 58s shaved off of what she ran from Leroy, Jenna was the 16th individual of the section V class D athletes. Libby managed to drop 63s from her Leroy time, while Rachel dropped 45s off of her previous McQuaid best. Other big drops off of personal bests included Regan (67s), Chloe (30s), Mackenzie (5s), Michayla (20s) and Sydney (18s). The team will be hosting this Tuesdays duel meet, make sure to come watch!

Duel @ Campbell
Tuesday the team headed over to Campbell for a muddy race through the corn fields. The girls beat both Hammondsport and CS by default (Incomplete teams) and improved their record to 7-4. On the boys side, Hammondsport and Campbell both showed up ready to race. They surprised us, and the boys were not able to respond, putting their record at 6-5.
Some of the highlights included Sydney making her first scoring finish in the top 5 for the girls, a solid 2:22 compression for our 2-8 girls (Rachel, Libby, Chloe, Sydney, Michayla and Mackenzie), and Jenna shocking Campbell's top girl in the last 100m to secure her first varsity win!
On the boys side, Lou, Dennis, Dom, Cam, Mason and JDP picked up a few more scalps (beat the 5th runner of the opposing teams), and Jake landed himself in the top 7 for the first time this season.
The modified athletes controlled the race, as 8 of the 12 modified runners were Ark-Can Wolves! NyVeah, Emma and Haylie narrowed the gap to just 81 seconds between our 1 (Kelsey) through 4 (Haylie) compared to the 2:05 1-4 compression last week in Hornell. Adding Sophia back in to the mix this weekend, there should be another strong modified girls performance. Andrew, Kaiden and Art all put together solid performances, and Paul was on pace before a wrong turn resulted in him finishing his race prematurely. If I have some time between tomorrow and the race Saturday, I'll try to do a race preview for McQuaid.

Leroy Invitational
With near perfect weather, the wolves put together a fantastic performance at the Leroy Invite. The day kicked off with the modified girls, highlighted by Sophia winning a water bottle for finishing in the top 15, and NyVeah, Emma and Haylie all earning ribbons for finishing in the top 50! They were followed up by a strong showing from the boys modified team. Andrew took 2nd place to earn himself a water bottle, and Paul closed hard over the last 400m to earn himself a water bottle as well! Art ended up finishing in the top 50 in his first invitational to bring home a ribbon.
The girls team showed their potential today by earning a 3rd place team finish for the small school division, bringing home 8 T shirts! Jenna finished in the top 50 to secure a ribbon in a personal best time of 22:30, while Libby, Rachel, Mackenzie, and Chloe all landed themselves on the top 10 list for Ark-Can XC at the Leroy Invite (head over to the records page to see)! All 4 of those girls, as well as Regan, Michayla, MacKenzzie, and Syd ran personal bests, while Alexis was well on her way to a personal best before taking a spill in the woods.
On the boys side, we had our best 1-5 finish yet of 79 seconds! The boys team results have not been posted yet, so I will update that later. Individually, Lou and Dennis earned themselves ribbons for finishing in the top 50, and 8 out of 10 boys ran faster times than last year. Some of the biggest drops in time included Ethan (11 minutes and 14 seconds), Justin (8:55), Drew (7:36), Dom (5:04) and Evan (2:08).
The team went home with 3 water bottles, 8 T-shirts and 10 ribbons. With one week to go until McQuaid, the team is looking poised to run some fast times against strong competition. Great work today, everyone!

Duel @ Hornell
Tuesday the team had their work cut out for them as they raced against all of the Steuben County teams. It was a great preview of the county meet as the girls emerged 2-1 (scored only against Addison, Avoca and Campbell-Savonna) and the boys 1-2. The girls are now a winning record of 5-4, while the boys stand at 6-3. If that had been the county meet, the boys would have walked out third and the girls second, the bar is now set!
Some of the highlights included a personal best from Jenna, along with a finish in Hornell and Addison's top 4, a personal best for Chloe, a top 5 finish for Regan for 146 second personal best, and a big jump for Sydney to be the 8th girl with a 36 second personal best! Alexis dropped a massive 2 minutes and 24 seconds as well.
On the boys side, Lou and Dennis ran their best so far, and Mason made a huge jump to run a 49 second seasons best. Cameron ran a personal best, followed by a season best from Evan, John, Jake and another 90 second drop by Ethan. Even without JDP, the boys put up a good fight against strong competition.
The modified boys and girls had strong performances as well. Andrew had his most competitive race of the season, finishing just behind Addison's top two boys, while Paul and Arthur had their debut races. Sophia and Kelsey finished 3rd and 4th against the entire county, while Haylie and NyVeah closed the gap from over 3 minutes earlier in the season to just over 2 minutes. We will be up and running at Leroy on Saturday, bring money for Tom Wahl's!

Duel @ Addison
Following a second strong showing at Addison on Tuesday against another strong Addison squad, the boys are now 5-1, and the girls are 3-3 after facing two of the top ranked class C schools in Section V (Addison and Hornell). Addison stole the show on the boys side, finishing 1, 2, 3 to clinch the meet. The course was arguably longer than 5k, so times did not mean much. However, being down a man today, Jesse managed to step up to the plate, finishing 5 seconds behind our third runner (Mason) to finish 11th overall. While it is hard to speculate since times were so off, on a longer course the gap from our first to last runner closed by over 2 minutes, well done, boys!
On the girls side, it was a tight race up front between Addison and Hornell, with Hornell finishing 1st, 26-29 points. The girls did not give up easily, as they did manage to get 3 girls in front of Hornell's 5th girl. One of the highlights was Regan finishing as our 5th girl for the day in just her first month of cross country! Libby and Rachel had a strong last 800m to edge Hornell's 5th girl, but their 1, 2, 3 finish in duel meet scoring clinched the meet for them.
We will be back in action on September 18th at Hornell to compete against all of the Steuben County teams.

Alfred University Invite
The wolves were back in action this morning to preview the Steuben County Championship course at Jericho Hill, hosted by Alfred University. With less than a 48 hour turn around from the race on Thursday evening, most of the runners were coming in with tired legs. Regardless, the girls managed to start the morning with a 3rd place team finish behind another strong Addison squad, and Seneca (I believe they are from PA). Some of the highlights included big races from Mackenzie, MacKenzzie and Regan - all of which ran over 1 minute faster per mile than they did on Thursday! The rest of the girls were able to pack together and work as a group through well over 2/3 of the race.
On the boys side, Dennis and Lou went out strongly with the front group, and managed to hang on to 13th and 22nd. Another strong race from Cameron, Jesse and Dominic rounded out the boys scoring. Arguably the biggest improvement of the weekend was Ethan dropping over 1:45 per mile from Thursday, as well as John dropping 92 seconds per mile.
We will be back in action on Tuesday in Addison, for our 3rd race in 5 days, followed by a week of training before the Steuben County as schools meet on 9/18. Great job this weekend!

Duel Meet 1 @ Hammondsport
After a very exciting first duel meet, the boys have emerged undefeated (3-0) with the girls close behind (2-1). In the last 14 years that I have been involved in cross country, I can't recall seeing a tie. When there is a tie, it is broken by the placement of the teams' 6th runners - whichever 6th runner finishes first is the winning team. It was a nail biter, but the Ark-Can wolves ended up on top.
On the girls side, Jenna had a competitive race up front with a strong Hornell girls team, and the rest of our pack ran through the first 1.5 miles together before breaking off to chase after Hornell's 5th girl.
The modified boys and girls ran well, highlighted by a 1,2 finish on both the girls side (Kelsey and Sophia) and the boys side (Andrew and Kaleb). We are back in action tomorrow at Alfred University.
