Sectionals
Both the boys and girls track teams took home their 3rd consecutive sectional titles on Saturday. The girls fought hard against an excellent Keshequa team, but some stand out performances led them to a 130 to 117 point win. The girls were led by a 4x8 title from Lizzie Young, Graceanne Fox, Bryn Friends and Hope Troutman. Jenna Franklin took first in the 1500m and 800m. Her 800m time was 0.10 seconds off of the school record. Lizzie Young placed 3rd in the steeplechase and 1st in the 3000m, Liv Kocan placed 4th in steeple and 5th in the 3000m, and Hope Troutman took 3rd in both the 1500m and 800m. NV Stewart placed 4th in the 1500m and 6th in the 800m. Mackenzie Flaitz placed 6th in the 400 hurdles. The girls 4x1 of Georgia O’Donnell, Faith Troutman, Chloee Henshaw and Mo Stuckey placed 2nd while the 4x4 of Mackenzie, Jenna, Chloe Herman and NV took 3rd. Shannon Spoth posted a big PR to take 2nd in the pentathlon.
In the field, Mo Stuckey placed 2nd in pole vault, Graysen Milliman placed 2nd in shot and 5th in disc, Caitlyn Gilman took 4th in shot and 2nd in high jump, and Chloee and Georgia took 4th and 5th in long jump.
The boys had a rough start with a tough DQ for their winning 4x8 relay, but they rallied to pick up points in other events. Salim Ford, Jacob Broughton and Rayhan Sayeed took 3rd, 4th and 6th in the steeplechase. Pierce Young and Ibra Ford took 1st and 2nd in the 1600. Kohler Preston dropped the 2nd best 400 in school history to placed 1st in the event. Zach Smith and Alex Preston took home 2nd and 6th in the 200. Pierce and Salim came back to place 1st and 3rd in the 3200. Braydon Brewster moved to a new event and took 3rd for the 400 hurdles. Ibra and Bryson Jones placed 1st and 4th in the 800. The boys 4x1 of Zander Ebelink, Zach, Kohler and Alex Preston took home 1st and ran within .2 seconds of the school record. The Pent crew of Alex Vilkhu and Cam Kernan took 2nd and 7th, with Alex establishing a new school record! The boys 4x4 of Kohler, Zach, Braydon and Pierce took home 1st and broke a 41 year old school record in the process!
In the field, Tim Vilkhu took 3rd in high jump and Kaleb Howe took 3rd in pole vault. It was an amazing all around team effort, and both teams had historic years. For the boys it marks the first time winning cross country, indoor and outdoor sectionals while the girls were runner up for cross country, but won indoor and outdoor sectional team titles.
Over the last 4 years, the teams have combined for 12 team titles and 36 individual sectional titles across all three sports. This senior class has officially rewritten the history of all three sports for Arkport-Canaseraga and we can’t be more thankful for their contributions on and off the track.
Looking ahead, the boys relays, girls 4x8, Pierce, Ibra, Jenna and Mo have qualified for the state qualifier at Batavia this Friday. We look to break more records and bring multiple athletes to the NYSPHSAA Championships on June 9th-10th.
The races will start with Pierce in the steeplechase. Since he has the super standard all he needs to do is compete and he will qualify for the state meet. The boys 4x100m runs second for us and is within arms reach of the school record. Their time of 45.78 at sectionals ranks 3rd in school history and is 0.14 seconds from the school record. Hope will make her outdoor state quals debut next in the 1500m. She comes in ranked 5th and will look to drop her seed time of 5:18. Kohler will take on the 400m next, seeded 8th in an incredibly front loaded field. The top 2 seeds have run under 48 seconds this season with 2 other athletes sub 50. He will have the chance to drop his seed time and take a shot at the school record of 50.74 from 1984. Jenna takes on the 800m next and comes in ranked 3rd. Her time from sectionals of 2:24.67 is 0.10 seconds off the school record and she looks to dip under that while taking a shot at qualifying for states. Lizzie Young is ranked 7th for D2 in the 3000m, but will face a loaded field which includes all of the D1 athletes. She ran within 12.22 seconds of the school record at Hilton, so the goal is to lower that time and try to crack the record from 2006. Salim comes in ranked 8th and hopes to crack 10:30 for the first time. This would move him into 4th all time. If he manages to run under 10:16.44 he would rank 3rd all time and break the previous school record held by Greg Kennel from 1973. The girls 4x800m comes in ranked 8th out of 8 division 2 teams with nowhere to go but up! They set a season best at Hornell, nearly 1 month ago. They will come in with 2 fresh legs and hope to crack 10:30. 4th in school history is 10:23.54 which would be an incredible improvement from last season. The boys 4x800m comes in ranked 3rd. They had two scratches ahead of them from Way-Co and Attica, but HFL and Batavia are the teams to beat.
Batavia has a season best of 8:14.81 and comes in with some individual stars. They boast season bests of:
Nathan Canale - 53.64, 1:59.41, 4:29.44
Cody Harloff - 2:01.42, 4:46.44
Noah Pickard - 2:07.71, 4:46.68
Ryan Dillon - 54.23, 2:05.87
Donovan Sollis - 56.14, 2:07.54, 4:43.49
Cameron Garofolo - 55.91, 2:10.24, 4:44.02
They have had a few 2:03-2:04 relay splits as well, so I would anticipate they are capable of running 8:06 or better if they need to. Last year we underestimated what they would be able to do as many of them were doubling back from open events. They had multiple athletes drop out of those open events to save their legs for the relay, so this year our mindset is that we are the clear underdog with something to prove.

Hornell Invite/Cadet Classic
The teams are off to a hot start as the regular season is winding down and championship season is gearing up! The boys finished the regular season with a perfect 7-0 sweep while the girls ended up 5-2, losing only to Addison and Canisteo. There have been some huge performances so far, but some of the highlights include:
- Ibra hitting 4:37.22 for the 1600m - a national qualifying standard for the freshman mile!
- Jenna improving her 2nd 800m in school history to a 2:29.06
There are more huge results to come as things are thawing out. I have been compiling and sorting to update the top 10 all time lists, and those should be solidified in the next 2 weeks.
Coming up this weekend we have the Hornell Invite on Friday night.(files.yentiming.com/outdoor/2023/hornell-program.pdf) (files.yentiming.com/outdoor/2023/hornell-field.pdf)
The links to the meet entries are above, and the QR code to find live results is posted above. We are looking forward to fast races and excellent performances in the field this weekend as the girls 4x800m chase a time to get them in to state qualifiers, the boys 800m crew looks to test the waters against each other, Pierce and Ibra match up with Section V’s finest over 3200m, and much much more!
