Sectionals, Showcase
I wanted to take some time to really process our sectional meet before writing about it, and I think I'm ready to break it all down.
The girls: The girls entered slightly favored over Keshequa at 103 to 99 based on the seeding sheets. The meet started off with Chloe in the hurdles picking up 1 point, followed by the girls 4x8 cruising to a 3rd place finish (knowing they had many more events to run). Selena snagged 6th in the 100m and then we picked up 6 total points between Chloe and Daria in the steeple. The 1500m plan worked to near perfection as Jenna set the pace and slowed down the race. Naomi hung around towards the front with her and was able to kick her way to 3rd to put up 16 points between her and Jenna's first individual sectional title. The girls 4x100m came to compete and took 2nd, while Chloe and Julia F put up 6 total points in the 400 hurdles. There was a hurdle mishap that led to them being held out of the total team scores until after the 4x400m (they had to rerun a heat of 1 girl because they left a hurdle off the track). Jenna and Naomi were back at it in the 800m to put up 9 total points, while Selena held off a hard charge from Mount Morris to take 3rd in the 200m. The 3000m was all about Em, she threw down a PR and took 5th to add to our point total.
Meanwhile, in the field, Julia Payne muscled out a 4th place throw in the shot. We fell just short of scoring in the discus, long and triple jump, but Mo made up for it by winning her first sectional title in the pole vault with a new PR! Katelyn and Caitlyn took 2nd and 4th in the high jump which saw 7 girls get out at 4'2", but Caitlyn had less misses to propel her to 4th in the standings. Sara had a landmark day, clearing what would have taken 3rd in the high jump within her pent. She finished 3rd overall, just 7 points off of second. It was an excellent performance for someone that had never long jumped, run an 800m, hurdled or thrown shot until about 5 weeks ago. By the final event, we had figured out that it would be statistically impossible for the team to not win, so it was one big celebration as the girls 4x400m turned in a 3rd place finish (with an excellent 1:07.87 and 1:04.56 from Chloe and Jenna). The girls won their first sectional title in a strong 98 points, 19 points ahead of second, for their first time in the last decade. It was amazing to see the emotion that some of these kids poured into this meet. What a day!
On the boys side, they entered as heavy favorites over Dundee, but we reinforced for the weeks leading up that there was no such thing as an uncompetitive sectional meet. I am writing this as the olympic trials are going on, and they keep mentioning "anything can happen at the trials." Anything can happen at ANY meet, and it did at sectionals!
The boys distance team put up a staggering 60 points between Braydon, Johnny, Salim, Pierce and Cameron, while Riley and the sprint crew put up a strong 34 points. The meet began with a runaway by Alfred Almond in the 4x800m to which we settled in to second, knowing there was more racing to be contested. Riley came up just short of the win in the 100m into a strong head wind but still managed to get the 8 points he was projected at. In the steeplechase we had Pierce, Braydon and Johnny take 1, 3 and 6 to post 17 points which put us in the lead as a team. Dakota locked down a 4th place finish in the 400m and Pierce and Salim took 1st and 6th in the 1600m to post 11 more points. Luck was on our side as the boys 4x100m took 3rd but saw Dundee DNF because of a hand off outside of the zone. Realistically, this was a massive turning point for the boys as they had been trailing by over 20 points for the majority of the meet. In the 800m, Cameron ran a great tactical race, closing in 61.5 to take 4th place. Riley battled in the 200m to put up a 3rd place finish, and the boys 3200m squad took 1, 2 and 5 (20 points) between Pierce, Salim and Braydon.
In the field, Andrew and Josh were busy putting up excellent performances. Drew placed 2nd in the triple jump with a near 3 foot PR, 4th in the long and 4th in the high jump. He put up a massive 16 points in the field while Josh took a surprise 4th place to put our teams at an even 104 points going into the 4x400m.
Our team was seeded first with a 3:46 and Dundee was seeded 6th with a 3:59. It was going to take our team beating their team head to head to win the meet. Luckily for us, our boys were ready to throw down as Drew opened with a 55.90, followed by Cam at 56.35, Dakota at 55.96 and Riley at 54.53 to take the 4x400m title and win the entire meet by 9 points. For the boys, this was the first team title in nearly 15 years. It was an incredible day, and I thank all of the kids, parents and community for supporting our team this year!
Lastly - the team wrapped up the season by competing at the NYS showcase in Accord, NY. Chloe paved the way with a big PR in steeple, running 8:40! Pierce shattered the school record for the 1600m enroute to a 4:32.51 mile (4:30.93 1600m). Salim and Ibra ran 5:08 and 5:10 to put the cap on a fantastic season for both of them which will open new doors this Fall in XC. Jenna may have set our school record in the full mile as I'm not sure if anyone else has run it? She closed it out in 5:52. Graysen had a great day in the shot and discus making her a strong contender to score points next outdoor season for varsity! Micah raced as well, posting a 3 second PR of 2:01.30 for the 800m. Congratulations everyone! Bask in the glory, XC unofficially begins 7/5.

Divisionals/Counties
With our final meet of the season approaching I wanted to mention the highlights from our two previous meets. Both teams competed well at divisionals and ended the season as divisional champions (boys 4-0 and girls 3-0-1). Some of the stand out performances at the divisional meet included wins from Riley, Josh, Evan, and Dakota in the 4x100m, Andrew, Josh and Kaleb in the field, and Pierce, Salim, Riley and Cameron on the track. Pierce managed to match the school record in the 1600m while Braydon, Salim and Cameron all ran personal bests. Cam came back with a personal best in the 800m as well. Nick threw a PR in the shot which puts him right outside of the top 40 for the class. On the girls side Naomi ran an excellent 1500m, Chloe and Sara posted PR's for the 100 hurdles, and the girls 4x400m ran a season best by 7 seconds! Jacey ran a PR of 17 seconds for the 1500m while Julia Flaitz ran a season best in the 400m. Daria and SyAnna posted huge PR's in the 3000m, Jenna F virtually time trialed a PR in the 800m and Naomi doubled back with a PR in the 800m as well. In the field, Caitlyn G threw a PR in shot which carried her in to sectionals. Katelyn Smith threw down a 4'9" high jump, ranking her 2nd in our class. Sara managed to improve her pent score by nearly 400 points which ranks her 3rd in our class.
At counties, both teams knew we were competing for second. Simply put, Canisteo's roster numbers overwhelmed the rest of the schools at the meet. With sectionals in mind we only raced most people in 2 or 3 events instead of the 4 they may be doing this Friday. Both teams did manage to place second and we had a few stand out performances along the way. Pierce broke yet another record running 9:57.04 for the steeple - it was a meet and school record. In the same event, Johnny made his debut and ranks 6th heading in to sectionals. Jenna broke the meet record in the 800m and ran an open PR as well. Naomi shaved off 2 more seconds on her 800m best, Dakota ran a PR in the 400m and Braydon ran a PR in the 800m. After an early fall, Chloe recovered and ran a 16 second PR in the steeple while Daria had an excellent debut. They enter sectionals seeded 4th and 5th. The girls 4x800m and 4x100m ran season bests putting them 2nd and 3rd heading in to sectionals. Bryn and Paige ran PRs in the 800m, both of them qualified individually for sectionals (Bryn for 3000m and Paige for 1500m). Selena threw down a HUGE time in the 200m to take 1st place.
Heading in to sectionals, both teams are in the hunt for their first titles since the mid 2000s. It should be a fantastic day led off by Sara in the pent hurdles and Chloe in the open 100 hurdles. The boys first track event will be the 4x8 where they race the 13 time defending champs, Alfred Almond.

Monsoon Meet
On Friday, both teams competed against Canisteo. We knew going in that this was going to be a tough meet to win, even if the weather was perfect. The team is gearing up to be as competitive as possible at sectionals in 2 weeks, so with that in mind we only entered most people in 1 event or in nothing at all.
The weather (continuous rainfall and low 40s) for the duration of the meet made it nearly impossible to post personal bests, but we challenged the team and they responded! Johnny knocked off another 22 seconds in the 1600m and Bryn, SyAnna and Jacey all tried their hand at the 3000m. They ran the 11th, 16th and 17th best times in B4 which puts them all in, or right on the bubble of making sectionals. Outside of that, the kids ran tough and fought through difficult conditions while keeping the complaints to a minimum - thank you :)
In the link below, the entries for divisionals this Tuesday at home are available. We have a few creative ideas for what we are doing for some people that are entered in multiple events. Similar to our meet against Canisteo, divisionals and counties will be opportunities to run season and personal bests instead of focusing on the team scoring. Let us know if you have any questions! The meet will begin at 5pm, please arrive at 4pm.

JT, Hammondsport, Hilton, Alfred Almond
I apologize for the serious delay! I can't believe the time got away from me. Well, I have some serious catching up to do, lets start with JT.
Both teams won it bringing the boys to 5-0 and girls to 3-1-1. With this, both teams clinched the division. Andrew jumped a nice 5'8" in high jump, Salim and Johnny ran personal bests in the 400m and Chloe posted a big time in the 400 hurdles.
The boys and girls both won against Hammondsport to improve their records to 6-0 and 4-1-1, respectively. On the girls side, Hammondsport only had one varsity girl race so most of the races looked like time trials. Bryn was a nice surprise in the 400m running 1:15, Julia F ran her first 400m hurdles of the season, Selena set a PR in the 200mm and triple jump, and the girls 800m squad saw PRs from Jenna, Chloe, NyVeah and Em. The boys had a tough squad to compete against, they set season bests in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800m. Dan and Josh threw very well in the disc, while Kaleb PR'd in pole vault and Andrew in triple jump.
We brought Pierce out to Hilton with Micah on Saturday, 5/22 to compete against section V's finest in the 3200m. In a field of 37, Pierce went in seeded 29th at 10:11.04. In his first 800m he nearly ran a personal best in the 800m, then he DID run a PR in the 1600m (4:43 ish) and hung in to finish 10th overall in 9:38.57 to improve his school record by 33 more seconds. He currently sits as the 2nd fastest sophomore in NYS and is top 150 in the country for sophomores. Unbelieveable job!
Our battle against Alfred Almond was everything we had hoped it would be. Both teams won, leaving the boys at 7-0 and the girls at 5-1-1. The meet started with a thrilled 4x800m on both sides. The teams both ran their season bests, with the boys posting the top time in B4 and the girls posting their 2nd best time. The splits were
Salim: 2:22.5 Naomi: 2:50.3
Braydon: 2:19.4 NyVeah: 2:55.3
Cam: 2:13.6 Daria: 2:58.9
Pierce: 2:02.9 Jenna: 2:32.0
7 out of the 8 runners ran a PR! The meet continued with a PR from Graysen in the 100m, a 27 second PR from Bryn in the 1500m, SyAnna and Jacey making their 1500m debut with very nice times, and a PR from Salim in the 1600m. Chloe once again knocked down her 400 hurdle time and is now top 4 in that event for B4. Em made her 3k debut and posted the 3rd fastest time in B4 to take the win in very controlled fashion. Sara ran her first 400m of the season and hit 1:11.4 in the relay - she is sitting at 3rd for our team at the moment in that event. Chloee H launched a personal best in the long jump along with Kailee. Graysen threw 2 feet further than before to rebreak her modified record in the discus. Mo hit a seasons best of 8'0" in pole vault, and Sara matched her life time best in high jump. Anna walked away with a 6'6" pole vault as well which would rank her for varsity in sectionals!
On the boys side, they managed to get the win with essentially 10 boys as Riley and Dakota only ran relays. Braydon ran his first 400 hurdles and sits at 9th for our class. Pierce ran a monster PR again in the 800m to take 2nd to Micah - he is now ranked 2nd. Johnny went out and improved his 3200m by 90 seconds from earlier this season and is now on the cusp of qualifying for sectionals. Josh tried shot for the first time and cracked 30 feet, Nick tossed a big PR in the discus, and Andrew won the high, long, triple and 200m to seal the deal for the win. Great work by everyone!

Bradford, Bath Invite, Leroy Invite
BUSY is the only word to describe a week with 3 meets. We led off with double victories against Bradford. There were some surprise performances in the 400m for both boys and girls as Jenna and Julia ran our 2 fastest times of the season while Dakota, Pierce, and Cam all broke 60 seconds. This was a nice precursor to our 4x400 relays at Bath. Both teams posted a season best for the relay, so the boys are now leading class B4 and the girls are ranked 2nd. Grace ran a PR in the 100m, as well as Riley. In the 400m hurdles, Cameron dropped 10 seconds and moved up to second in our class. Our boys 4x100m ran a season best and are tied for 1st in our class. Josh posted a PR in the discus against Bradford, as well as Jenna Mess. Jenna Franklin ran within 1 second of her personal best in the 1500m and is now leading B4, while Emily P, Daria, NyVeah and Paige all set personal bests to rank them well for sectionals. Pierce ran a PR in the 1600m which is within 1 second of Micah's class leading time. Braydon ran a PR while Salim matched his personal best. Daria ran a PR in the 3k against Bradford to rank her 5th in our class. Caitlyn, Nick and Mackenzie both threw PR's in the shot at Bath while Jacey did in Bradford. Andrew, Grace, and Caitlyn all jumped PR's in the high jump, while Katelyn was just under her personal best. Kailee and Ashley set their long jump records in Bradford while Sara and Chloee set over 1 foot personal bests at Bath. Jenna, Chloe, Julia F and Naomi all ran fantastic times that are all ranked in the top 16 for B4. Dakota ran the 3rd fast 400m for B4; Pierce and Cameron ran top 12 times (not bad for cross country stars). Lastly, Pierce ran the 3rd fastest 800m time. The splits for the Bath 4x400m are below:
56.4 - Dak
58.7 - Riley
57.8 - Pierce
57.3 - Cam
1:12.1 - Mo
1:14.4 - Julia
1:12.3 - Chloe
1:05.7 - Jenna
The 4x400m was incredibly exciting on both sides. It was the first time I have seen the boys 4x400m break 4:00 since I have been at Arkport. The girls ran .91 off of their 3rd place performance from 2 years ago which took them to 3rd at sectionals.
For our modified athletes, Graysen improved her modified records in the shotput and discus. Her performances would rank her 8th in the discus and shotput for sectionals for varsity. Ibrahim lowered his school record in the 1500m to run 4:50. His time converts to 5:10 which would be the 4th fastest 1600m in our class. Lily PR'd in the shotput by 4 feet at Bradford. Lizzy put together some nice performances in high jump and the 100m. Anna is still waiting to pole vault in a meet, but ran a nice 100m and 200m in the mean time!
Avoca Duel/Hornell Invite
It was a big week for Ark-Can Track and Field! On Tuesday the boys defeated Avoca decisively, and the girls ended the meet in a rare tie. All results have been entered on the sectionvtrack.com leaderboard. Some of the highlights included:
- Pierce breaking a 48 year old school record in the 3200m running 10:11
- Katelyn clearing 4'8" in the high jump
- Chloe dropping more time in the 400 hurdles to put her top 5 in sectionals
- Graysen breaking both the modified discus and shotput records
- Ibra establishing a blistering 11:03 3000m modified record
- Sara stepping up to try hurdles and shot-put
- Jenna Mess throwing a massive PR in the discus
- Dakota getting back to the track for the first time this season
- Personal bests by Salim, Bibo and Cam in the 1600m
- Personal bests by Salim, Cam, NyVeah, Chloe, Jenna Franklin, and Jacey in the 800m (some were relay splits)
- Chloee Henshaw putting up a PR in the long jump
- Andrew jumping a PR in the high jump
There are even more, but frankly the team is doing so well right now that it's tough to summarize in just a few lines!
Last night started and ended with Sara finishing her first pentathlon. She posted excellent results in all events, especially considering the brutal cold and rain that persisted throughout the entire meet. Some of the big highlights were:
- Mo opening up her season with a fine 200m time after the pole vault was cancelled.
- Evan posting a triple jump PR
- Pierce running within 1 second of the school record for the steeplechase
- Bibo finishing his first steeple in an excellent time, but more importantly he picked himself up and competed for 2nd after falling in the first lap and nearly falling in the last lap.
- Jenna winning wire to wire in the 800m against the reigning class C cross country champion
- Salim posting a PR in the 800m
- Chloe running a 44 second personal best in the steeplechase (unreal!!!!)
- Andrew placing 3rd in triple jump
- Daria running a PR in the 400m
- Naomi running a seasons best in the 800m
- Dakota running a Class B4 leading 400m time
The kids made the most of the inclement weather, and more important than their performances they showed us why we think they are one of the best teams in our class. A few teams skipped the meet entirely, a lot of teams left early and skipped their events, and our team showed up to the line ready to compete! I have some serious updating to do with top 10 performances, hopefully I will have time this weekend. We will continue this season next week with a duel against Bradford on Wednesday and a mini invite at Bath on Friday. Cross your fingers for better weather!

Home vs. Addison
First meet is in the books! It was an excellent morning, minus some injuries. The girls narrowly lost 73 to 66, while the boys won it 84 to 34. Some of the highlights included a speedy 3200m by Pierce and Salim, both of which ran personal bests and cracked the top 4 all time (or at least in recorded history). The girls 4x8 (Jenna, Naomi, Bryn and Daria) picked up right where they left off 2 years ago, running .2 seconds faster than our sectional 4x8. The boys improved as well running the fastest time I've seen from an Arkport team in the last decade. Chloe, Julia and Daniel picked up some crucial points in the hurdles, followed by an excellent showing from Selena and Chloee in the 100m. Riley and Josh locked in 2nd and 3rd in the 100m as well.
Cameron and Pierce took 1, 2 in the 1600, but Johnny stole the show with a 30 second personal best. Jenna ran tough and took 2nd to Faith. Both 4x1s took the win, both running within 1 second of our season bests from 2019. In the 400, Naomi ran what looks like a personal best to place 3rd. Chloe took the victory in the 400 hurdles while Cam placed second. In the 800, Daria and Jacey took 2nd and 3rd while Bibo and Johnny took 1st and 3rd in a tactical race. Chloee and Selena virtually tied for 1st in the 200 running some blazing fast times. NyVeah ran a great first 3k to take 3rd place. The track events were capped off with a win by both 4x4s, including an excellent anchor leg from Nick in his first 400m.
In the field, Andrew won the high, triple and long jump, setting personal bests in all 3 events. Mo and Kaleb won the pole vault, while Katelyn, Sara and Grace swept the high jump. Sara and Chloee placed 2nd and 3rd in the long jump with personal bests. Jenna Mess and Julia Payne took 2nd and 3rd in discus, and Josh and Daniel took 1st and 2nd. Our modified team had an excellent showing - Graysen would have scored in the varsity meet for both shot and disc. The shot was rounded out with a win by Daniel and a 2nd and 3rd by Julia Payne and Mackenzie Flaitz. I'll update the top 10 lists this weekend and post that info on Monday. Great job to everyone, on to meet #2!

Back into the swing of things
The season is back underway as we started practice yesterday. While we have a smaller crew than last year, everyone seems focused and ready to make the most of this short season. I will continue to post updates as the season progresses, so keep an eye out!
Today's workout for the sprinters was our 23 second test. They ran as far as the could in 23 seconds, we recorded the distance and then had them do it again after a brief rest. The results are below:
