Will won the pole vault to bring home another patch, Lou took 3rd in the 3200m, Pierce took 2nd in the steeplechase, and Dakota took 4th in the 400m. County Qualifier (Divisionals)
An exciting Wednesday night meet at JT ended up being a huge success. Anyone that finished in the top 8 of their event advances to the county meet on Friday night, and anyone that won is considered a Steuben county all star.
On the boys side, a few highlights included a first place finish from Matt in the 110HH and 400IH, as well as a 3rd place finish in the 100m and 2nd place finish in the 200m. Dakota ended up with a 3rd place finish in the 100m and 2nd place in the 400m - he ran 3 personal bests between the 100m, 200m and 400m! Will sky rocketed himself in to the state qualifier meet (for now) with a 11'9" vault, Andrew jumped a personal best in the triple jump, Josh ran a season best in the 100m and 200m, and Lou managed to crack 11:00 in the 3200m for 3rd place.
On the girls side, Mo vaulted 8 feet to put her top 15 in section V division 2 (that includes class B, C, CC, D and DD) to place second. All three relays won, all in huge season best times! Katelyn won the high jump with a new best of 4'6", while Sara B, Sara H and Taryn all took 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Taryn also managed a new best in the long jump to win. Georgia had a great long jump which was a personal best and good enough for 2nd. Jenna won the 1500m, then came back with Naomi and took 1st and 2nd in the 800m while Chloe managed a new 800m PR. Julia P took first in the shot put, Sara B won the 100m, and Jaden and Haleigh both hit the sectional qualifying mark with some outstanding performances in the pentathlon.
To reiterate, anyone in the top 8 in their event is competing on Friday. Some people will not run all the same events they did on Wednesday because the meet is scored, so we will adjust to maximize team performance. The full results are posted below:

Wellsville Invite Recap
Most of the underclassmen headed to Wellsville on Saturday to compete in the longest running invitational in New York State (according to the Wellsville coaches). While we anticipated missing some juniors and seniors because of the prom, we were very surprised to have 5-6 kids not show up that were planning on competing. Regardless, it was the most exciting meet of the year watching Rush Henrietta break meet records left and right (I believe they took down over 10 records between boys and girls).
The meet had some serious ups and downs. In the pentathlon, Chloe ended up qualifying for sectionals, which ranks her 4th right now in Class D. Julia F. ran her fastest 400m of the season and her 2nd fastest 400IH, Naomi posted a personal best in the 800m, Jenna ran 2 more sectional qualifying marks in the 800m and 1500m, Taryn ran a personal best in the 100HH, while Mackenzie Flaitz moved up the ranks in the sectional qualifications in the 400IH with a personal best. In the field, Mo vaulted a massive personal best of 7'7" to tie her for 2nd in Class D, while Taryn was half an inch shy of 14 feet in the long jump.
On the boys side, Dakota ran a season best in the 200m which puts him in the top 16 for Class D. Evan ran a 6 second personal best in the 800m, Lou ran a personal best in the 1600m to win the 1st heat by over 10 seconds, then came back to run a personal best in the 3200m which ranks him 7th in Class D. Dan Geffers ran a huge personal best in the 110HH putting him within striking distance of qualifying for sectionals, and Matt Geffers matched his 400IH personal best to the 100th of a second, ranking him 2nd in class D for that event. Pierce and Dominick both took hard falls in the steeple, but finished regardless, Dominick in a personal best time by almost 10 seconds. His time puts him 14th in Class D. The boys 4x100m posted a season best time, putting them 6th in Class D.

The team will be back in action either Monday or Wednesday, weather pending, for the county qualifier meet at Jasper Troupsburg.

Ferd Stenta Invite @ Bath
The team was put to the test at the Bath Invite against some larger schools, as well as 37 degree real feel temperatures for the majority of the meet. The weather was not conducive to fast times, but that didn't stop the team from going out and competing. On the girls side, Taryn, Cheyenne and Sara all jumped season bests in the long jump, Taryn ran a personal best in the hurdles, Julia F. ran a personal best in the 400 hurdles, and Mackenzie F. finished her first steeplechase. Georgia made her varsity debut, helping a team of Syd, Katelyn and Cheyenne run an unofficial school record 4x200m! Mo vaulted a personal best, Naomi posted a season best in the 800m, and both doubled back with Jenna and Julia F. to post a season best 4x400m.
On the boys side, Pierce ran like a veteran in the steeplechase to finish 6th, while Dennis and Hensh finished 11th and 17th. The boys JV 4x200m of Riley, Andrew, Evan and Alex finished 2nd, Tyler ran a personal best in the 400m IH, and Geff finished 4th in the 100m out of 30 competitors. Lou and Dom took 4th and 5th in the 3200m, and the JV 4x100m of Evan, Riley, Josh and Alex took 2nd despite some rocky hand-offs. Geff took 4th in the 200m while Dakota finished 7th, and Riley managed to finish 9th in the 400m, followed by JDP and Evan in 14th and 15th. Geff finished out a big day with a runner up finish in the 110 HH, while Lou, Dennis and Pierce battled it out in the wind and rain to run close to season bests in the 1600m. Will took 6th in the vault, and David notched a big personal best in the discus before running a strong leg in the 4x100m throwers relay with Haydn, Tyler and Dan to finish 5th. Stay warm this weekend, and recover! The team is back in action on Tuesday, once again at Bath for a league meet.

Modified @ Bradford
The modified meet kicked off with a big time drop by the girls 4x200m from 2:23 to 2:18! Now to see if the varsity girls can take down their time on Friday! The 1500m was up next with another strong finish by Braydon, and a debut by Paige, NyVeah and John. Paige hit the sectional qualifying mark, and NyVeah just barely missed as they finished 2nd and 5th! In the 100m, Kelsey dipped under 16 seconds for the first time, and there were strong finishes right behind her from Kaylee, Caitlin and Jenna. Emma and Haylie dueled it out in heat 3 to finish well. Zach Amidon ran a blazing fast 100m, followed by personal bests from Dustin and Carlito. In the 400m, Georgia moved up, while Chloe and Michayla dropped down in distance to all run personal bests, with Georgia posting the 4th fastest 400m time on the team this season, including varsity.
In the second half of the meet, Zach Smith broke 30 seconds in the 200m, while Carlito, Kaleb and Art duked it out in the next heats. In the high jump, Caitlin managed to make it over 4 feet, with Michayla, Chloe, Brennan and Kaylee all clearing 3'9". Our long jumpers took 1st for both boys and girls (Georgia and Zach S.) followed closely by Brennan, Kelsey and Paige. We will have the weekend off of racing before preparing to compete in two meets next week!

We are back! The results of the meet were a large win of 77-62 for the girls over JT, and 104-24 over Campbell. For the boys, they won in a close battle against JT by 2 points. It was much more one sided as they beat Campbell. Some of the highlights of the meet were a double win by Matt Geffers in the 110 HH, and 400m IH. The boys swept in the 1600m (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and 3200m, led by Dominic, Pierce, Dennis and Lou. Lou came up clutch with a narrow win in the 800m which ended up being the points we needed to win. David had break through performances in the disc and shot, and Will stepped up to the 400IH to take 3rd. The young fellas, Alex and Andrew, took 2nd and 3rd in the long jump, while Andrew followed it up with a 2nd place finish in the high jump.
For the girls, they started out with a 2nd and 3rd place finish in the 100 HH by Taryn and Haleigh. Jenna had a big day, helping the 4x800m to a 2nd place finish along with Mackenzie F, Julia F and Julia P, followed by a 1st place finish in the 400m and 3000m in a thrilling finish. Varsity @ Keshequa
The season kicked off yesterday with the varsity team heading over to a mini invite at Keshequa, and the modified team heading to Campbell. The results are posted below. It's hard to gauge the level of success because of the weather (45 and windy), but there were a few surprises from new athletes. The mod results were never sent to me, so we don't have any official results yet! More to come.

Notices
Last night the Steuben County coaches met to discuss a few minor changes for the upcoming season. The biggest points of interest were rules involving "scratches" at counties, sectionals and state qualifiers, as well as the number of qualifying athletes for state qualifiers. The latest and greatest is that athletes are now able to enter an event, check in for the event, and not show up to participate in the event - but they will still be able to compete for their other events in the meet. In the past, if you did not compete in your event, you were done for the rest of the meet. This should be interesting for how the entries in counties, sectionals, and state qualifiers are handled.
As for state qualifiers, they are now letting 16 athletes in to any lane events, per division. This means there will be 16 D2 qualifiers in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100/110HH, and 400 IH. There will also be trials and finals for all of these events. In the distance events, field events and relays, there will be 12 qualifiers. Below are the times for the last qualifying marks in each event, boys and girls, for state qualifiers.

The Countdown
With less than 2 months until the track season, I wanted to do a bit of a scouting report from last years track season (I am getting some serious cabin fever from sitting inside all winter!). I am going to begin with the boys team, which will have some big shoes to fill with the graduation of JB. As per every track season, we are bringing in new athletes which is one of the most exciting parts of the season. It brings me back to my senior year of outdoor track, when we had a "superstar to be" join our team, and help elevate our team to a whole new level. That is a story for another day!
Last year, the boys placed 9th out of 18 scoring teams with 25.5 points. The boys left an easy 8 points on the track after a DNF in the 4x100m relay - their season best would have put them in contention to win. Had they secured those points, they would have ended up 7th, within 15 points of 3rd. That being said, Jackson came home with 20 points by himself, meaning we have a lot of ground to make up to move up as a team.
The returning scorers are:
Dennis Pierce - 3000m Steeplechase (4th)
Louis Payne - 3200m (6th)
We had a handful of 7th place finishes (only the top 6 score points), but as of now we will be looking to some of our returning athletes to step up, including:
Matt Geffers (110m HH/400m IH)
Josh Abraham (Long Jump)
Will Chamberlin (Pole Vault)
Dominic Staub (1600m/3200m)
Cameron Williams (800m/1600m)
Jesse Dean Prince (400m/800m)
Dakota Pierce (200m/400m)
Evan Buisch (100m-800m)
Right now, we have a glaring deficit in the field events and relays that will need to be filled in. If some modified athletes decide to test up, they would make an immediate impact on our varsity team. As of now, we are looking at changing up the meet schedule a bit from last year, but that stands with a big TBD over top of it. Throughout the next few weeks, the schedule should firm up and I will post it as soon as it is available.
